An old friend has returned home. I sold this coin several years ago and was happy when my client offered to sell it back to me. It has deeply reflective fields that contrast with the frosty devices. There is some reddish cabinet toning.

I believe PCGS would give it the Cameo designation if it were dipped. Happily it is all original and has avoided that fate. There isn't must premium for the cameo designation in this series and this is a premium priced example so fortunately there isn't much financial incentive to strip and flip it.

Only 600 coins were minted the final year of this short lived series, all of them proofs. Twenty cent coins were minted from 1875 to 1878. In the final 2 years only proofs were minted. The biggest mintage was the 1875-S with over a million made. Those are the most frequently found and they often have unattractive toning, have been dipped to death or are otherwise undesirable. The series was discontinued partly due to complaints it was too similar to the quarter.
